With spring here at last, our skin is showing the tell-tale signs of months spent either in central heating or biting cold. Arabella Preston, the Co-Founder of cult skincare brand Votary shares her tips for giving your skin some much-needed TLC
ARABELLA PRESTON AT HOME IN KENT
After a long winter spent stuck inside, our skin is looking less than brilliant. What would you recommend to give it a boost?
Exfoliation is key to a summer glow. I usually rely on the exfoliation I get from my flannel when I oil cleanse. It gets my skin really clean but also serves to lift away dead skin cells. However, in this transitional period I also use Votary Toning Serum which has low levels of glycolic acid for a gentle and even exfoliation.
As a mother with a burgeoning business, how do you claim time for yourself? If you have an hour to yourself at home, how do you spend it?
In the bath! Even in the peak of summer I love a really hot bath with aromatherapy oils and a great book. Bliss. My bath is also where I make time for a proper skincare routine. I often double cleanse and sometimes even leave our Super Seed Cleansing Oil on as a mask.
Votary is known for its use of super seed oils. How and when did you first discover the benefits of putting them on your skin?
I am passionate about the ability of plant oils to clean, nourish and protect skin. When I was working as a make-up artist I would see first-hand how massaging a plant oil into skin would bring it to life and make it look its best without any irritation. Super Seed Facial Oil is ideal for sensitive, reactive skin as it is fragrance free and deeply nourishing.

Are there any particular techniques you’d recommend for applying facial oils so you can get the maximum benefit from them?
Don’t use too much, 4-5 drops for your face and neck is plenty. Then spend at least a minute (or more if you have time) massaging the oil into your skin in small circular upwards motions.
Is there anything you particularly love about your bathroom itself which makes it an especially lovely place to relax?
My enormous bath. I am tall, so I need a big, deep bath to fully submerge. I also have an antique washstand with a marble top and house plants which gives my essentially all-white bathroom a bit of life. A stack of fluffy white flannels in your bathroom gives you that indulgent spa feel – I use a clean one every morning for my morning cleanse, then use the same one that evening to remove my make-up. It is also the fastest short-cut to glowing, radiant skin, so it’s a win-win!
